Northern Outer Banks FAQ

The Northern Outer Banks is the very northeast corner of the North Carolina coastline. This portion of the OBX stretches from the town of Corolla all the way up through Carova Beach`s 4x4 area to the Virginia border and rests between the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound. The Northern Outer Banks is part of Currituck County. This area is only accessible by driving North on Route 12 through Southern Shores and Duck, NC. It is home to many attractions like wild roaming horses, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Whalehead, and more. KEES has more than 70 vacation rentals in the Northern Outer Banks! All of these properties have something special for the whole family. These homes range from 2 bedroom condos to 24 bedroom wedding and event homes.

What makes the Northern Outer Banks unique is the location. The location being a little far from the bridge means it takes a little work to get to the location. When you get here you`re met with small town charm. Only two stop lights in town and a few places to stop and shop like Tim Buck II and Corolla Light Town Center. The beaches are known for being family friendly and wide with many lifeguards serving the area. You won`t find high-rise hotels, big box stores or familiar chains and franchises you might see in other towns. There is a multi-use path that stretches across the town and a historical section you can walk through along with numerous nature trails.

There are over 15 public beach accesses in the Northern Outer Banks like the popular Currituck County Southern Public Beach Access near the Currituck Club. 6 of these beach accesses have lifeguard stands during the busy summer months. The 4x4 accessible beach is 100% public and requires a pass from Currituck County to park on the beach. Most of the communities within Corolla limit parking to driveways and do not allow parking on the streets so the beach access is limited to those who are staying within that community.

Here at KEES we work with you to help decide which home is best for you and your group. If you are looking for something smaller and private, a community like Ocean Sands might be a good place to stay. If you are looking for activities for the children so you can take a moment to breathe and relax, the Currituck Club or Corolla Light are great recommendations.

For larger groups, we always recommend renting one larger home with your family instead of multiple homes. This will help split up the costs of the rental, share costs on food and drink, and save some money for activities. Imagine if you have one big meal at the house instead of going out to eat and waiting in line for a restaurant. Instead of buying 20 movie tickets, you rent a movie and watch it in your in-home movie theater. The choices are endless and you can spend a lto of your time around your house and beach access without having to go far. Northern Outer Banks has multiple grocery stores nearby like Harris Teeter and Food Lion when you need to grab some food.

Absolutely! Many homes allow pets, specifically dogs at their home. After all, many homeowners are pet owners, too! Homes that allow pets will indicate it in the listing. Typically there is a small fee for bringing your pet to help offset the cost of wear and tear. Guests are responsible for picking up after their pets and pets are not allowed in the pools for safety reasons.

Northern Outer Banks beaches are VERY pet-friendly. Leashes are required, however there is no leash length requirements. For more information, we recommend contacting Currituck County at 252-453-8555.

The summer on the Outer Banks is the most popular due to the water and air temperature being the warmest and the kids are out of school. Spring and fall on the Outer Banks are ll equally fun with different opportunities for event and activities and less crowds on the beach. During the winter months, the weather can be a little cool and rarely falls below freezing. Many businesses do close during the winter so it`s best to check ahead before heading out to a restaurant.
