Yes, visitors may access one of the conveniently located beach off-road vehicle ramps throughout Hatteras Island, but you will need to get a permit to do so. If you need to get a permit, visit Cape Hatteras National Seashore Orv Permit, Cape Hatteras National Seashore - Recreation.gov, or call 1-877-444-6777.
Also, make sure you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle and deflate the tires before getting on the beach. A tire pressure of less than 20 psi is recommended for most vehicles. The softer the sand, the lower the pressure needed. Re-inflate tires to normal pressure as soon as possible after you return to paved roads. If you get stuck and cannot get your vehicle out, your best bet is to call a commercial towing service.
Waves, in the Tri Villages, has miles of uncrowded beaches giving you ample space to catch some sun. It is also a popular destination for watersports including kiteboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing due to being sandwiched by both the ocean and the Pamlico Sound. You will enjoy shopping and can enjoy exploring the various eateries around town. For the anglers in your group, Waves is the perfect location. Not only will you enjoy fishing along the miles of beaches in Waves, but you will also find bait and tackle shops to help you find the equipment you need.
Waves is close to several attractions in the tri-village area, including the historic Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, the Salvo Post Office, the Rodanthe Fishing Pier, and the miniature Salvo Post Office. These are great places to explore. If you venture all through Hatteras Island, you will find several other attractions. Of course, the greatest of all is the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound!
KEES Waves Vacation rentals are so comfortable and inviting, that a good day can be spent hanging out at the rental home, enjoying a good book on an expansive deck, relaxing in the hot tub, or lounging on the comfortable furniture. Some of our vacation rentals have home theatres that can allow the whole family to experience a movie but in the comfort of their Waves vacation rental.
Waves is close to the Highway 12 Amusement Center in Rodanthe, as well as a collection of beach stores, coffeehouses, and bead stores. Waves is also a 30-minute drive away from several Outer Banks attractions, including the North Carolina Aquarium. There's always shopping and gallivanting around the Outlet mall in Nags Head or downtown Manteo.
For those that like to surf, surfing in the ocean can still be done in the rain as can fishing!
The most popular time to book a Waves vacation is the summer. Summer on the Outer Banks has the warmest months of the year and contains the most sunshine. With this comes the days that are mostly filled with other visitors. Spring and fall on the Outer Banks, while cooler, do provide for some great beach days. In addition, during these seasons, the roads, stores, and restaurants are the least crowded. The price of rentals is a little lower and there is more availability. You will find some festivals on the Outer Banks during the spring and fall as well.
During the winter months, the weather (and the ocean water) is cooler and there are fewer people in town. Also, many businesses close during the winter to give their teams time for some rest. However, the winter provides peace and tranquility to support full relaxation with the uncrowded, quiet beaches and there are still sunshine-filled days for a great getaway. Being further south, this area is prone to being in the path of hurricanes. Just listen to the weather forecasts and make sure you are prepared.
