FAQ
Hatteras Island, North Carolina, is a place of pure natural beauty. It is comprised of seven villages following 70 miles of the Cape Hatteras national seashore, with the Atlantic Ocean greeting you on the side as you travel down NC Route 12. Each village has its unique characteristic and it's fun to explore each one. Hatteras Island vacation rentals provide you with a sense of peace and tranquility, away from the more populated northern beaches of the Outer Banks. There are several locally owned galleries and shops that will allow you to find cute items to buy that you can't find anywhere else.

The only real con of a vacation rental in Hatteras is the threat of hurricanes or tropical storms, but if you browse the internet and find out the weather forecast, you will be fine.

Hatteras Island is unique from its neighboring Outer Banks communities because it is comprised of seven different villages; going south (in geographical order) are Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village. Thus, Hatteras Village is located on Hatteras Island. These villages offer ocean or sound views, and sometimes both - the Atlantic Ocean runs parallel to Route 12, the only road in and out of Hatteras Island. A drive through the Island offers travelers miles of beauty and undeveloped landscape. There is water on the east and west side of the highway. Stop and explore the features and offerings of the Island. Visitors will find that they are somewhere special – the majority of Hatteras Island businesses are locally owned and operated.

The entire Outer Banks is family-friendly including Hatteras. KEES Outer Banks has so many options for Hatteras Island vacation rentals/cottages that you are sure to find one that fits the needs of everyone in the family, including the pets, as well as all guests. In addition, activities abound in all towns and villages of the Outer Banks you are sure to find something for everyone to enjoy.

Yes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open seasonally for self-guided climbs. It has 257 steps from the ground to the balcony level, equal to climbing a 12-story building. The narrow stairs have a handrail only on one side, two-way traffic, and a landing every 31 steps.

There are several tourist attractions on Hatteras Island. Did you know that you can also visit the first-ever lifesaving station in Rodanthe? The Avon Fishing Pier is a neat place to watch hard-core fisherman get their catch of the day. While in Buxton, explore and hike the Buxton Woods Nature Trail. Right in Frisco is the Frisco Native American Museum as well as the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Driving a little further south past all of the villages of Hatteras Island, you can take a nice ferry ride to Ocracoke. Just to name a few! Below is a listing of other tourist destinations that are easily accessible from Rodanthe, the northern village of the seven villages of Hatteras Island.

Corolla: 60 miles (1 hour 25 mins)
Wright Brother's National Memorial: 33 miles (41 mins)
Nags Head: 28 miles (32 mins)
Kill Devil Hills: 34 miles (44 mins)
Roanoke Island: 40 miles (43 mins)
Bodie Island Lighthouse: 19 miles (22 mins)

In addition, Rodanthe is only 16 miles from Oregon Inlet where you can book boat charters on the Pamlico Sound for the whole group.

There are several attractions on Hatteras Island; thus, it is difficult to pick just one. Visiting the different villages is an attraction in itself. You will find each one with its unique character. In Frisco, you will find the Frisco Native American Museum. At end of Hatteras Village is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Probably not an all-day museum, but some really interesting artifacts and exhibits. A visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse is a must in the summer.

Be sure to stay in the left-hand lane when driving to the museum. Bear to the right, and you’ll end up in line for the Ocracoke Island ferry.

Hatteras Island is also the home of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
