Beach Day Tips & Tricks

There's nothing quite like a day on the Outer Banks beaches!

Sunshine, salty air, rolling waves, and plenty of room to relax. To help make your time on the sand even smoother, we've gathered a few easy tips and tricks for packing smarter, staying comfortable, and making the most of every beach day.

Snow Sled

Use an inexpensive snow sled to tote your gear rather than a beach wagon.

Keep It Cool

Put your phone in the cooler in a waterproof bag so that it doesn't overheat.

Shade Made Simple

Pack a lightweight pop-up canopy for easy coverage, or search KEES rentals that include cabana or umbrella service for a setup that's ready when you are.

Freeze Wet Washcloths

Wet a few washcloths, roll them up, freeze them, and store them in a bag in the cooler. They are perfect for sticky hands, hot faces, and sandy kids.

Frozen Treats

They work like mini ice packs and make a refreshing beach snack once they start to thaw.

Hide Valuables

Use an empty sunscreen bottle, wipes container, or snack container to discreetly store small items like keys or cash.

Brush It Off

Old makeup brushes or paintbrushes are perfect for brushing sand off little feet, sunscreen lids, phones, and sunglasses.

Sunscreen Bag

Pre-pack sunscreen in a zip-top bag. It keeps lotion leaks from ruining towels, snacks, or clothes.

Baby Powder

Using baby powder at the car helps get the sand off of feet.

Kiddie Pool

Keep little ones safe, cool, and happy with an inflatable pool. You can bring a hand pump to make the job quicker.

Pet-Friendly Reminders

We love bringing dogs along for the fun, but hot sand, strong sun, and high temperatures can be dangerous for them. On especially hot or humid days, or during the peak afternoon sun, it may be best to let your pup relax comfortably back at the rental instead of joining you on the beach.

  • Hot sand can also burn paws, so test it with your bare feet first.
  • Offer shade often.
  • Bring fresh water for your dog. Dogs may try to drink salt water, so pack a bowl and plenty of fresh water.
  • Rinse off salt and sand. After a beach day, rinse your dog's coat and paws to help keep them comfortable.
  • Know and respect leash laws.

Respect the Beach
  • Fill in any holes before you leave. Large holes can be dangerous for beachgoers, lifeguards, emergency vehicles, and nesting sea turtles. Sand collapses can also happen in holes only a few feet deep.
  • Leave shells, dunes, and wildlife undisturbed. The dunes help protect the coastline, and local wildlife depends on the natural beach environment.
  • Pack out what you pack in. Bring a small bag for wrappers, cans, and snack containers so nothing gets left behind.
  • Bring a trash bag to collect trash you find on the beach.
  • Learn the beach flags and what to do in the event of rip tides.
